Basic words and phrases for your trip to Thailand

Actualizado: 4 oct 2020

Although nowadays most people who work for tourists speak English, it might be of interest to learn some basic words and phrases in Thai language. This is why I have put together the ones that are more necessary when you travel abroad and I have divided them in different sections. I hope they are useful.

First, I want to make an introduction about Thai language. It originated in the south of China and it comes from the Tai-Kadai languages. It is spoken by an 85% of the population of Thailand, about 70 million people, and it has many dialects, but the one taught at schools and universities is the Siamese Thai. The Thai alphabet has 44 letters. It is a very strict tonal language, which means that there are five different tones (low, high, upward, downward and medium) and the one you use will depend on what you are saying.
